Earlier this month, the City of Birmingham, Alabama launched a new program aimed at connecting neighbors experiencing homelessness to the resources they need. HEART stands for Homeless Engagement Assistance Response Team,

“HEART team members will be on the street from 7 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. There are 20 members of the team who are working to get people off the streets and into safe places like the Jimmie Hale Mission.”

In a related story, District 2 Jefferson County Commissioner Sheila Tyson is raising alarm over homelessness numbers in Birmingham, Alabama.

“It’s a concern,” Tyson said. “Not to try to do away with them, but to help them. You know, are they being helped properly to where it would pull them out of the homeless category and into either renters or homeowners.”
